As Day 2 begins, I am further and further removed from the notes I took. Which means that, if I had trouble reading before, it’s only going to get worse. Undeterred, I plunge on. Part III of not sure how many follows.
9:26- Everyone says that 1) the second day goes much faster and 2) I’ll be bored stiff. Sounds like a plan. After all, we are going to have six rounds in about the time it took to have one “yesterday.”
9:38- Really nothing is happening.
9:44- ESPN.com doesn’t know who has the 69th pick. How is that possible? What of this mystery pick? Will we ever know what happened to it? (Note: we will).
9:55- Calling roll again. It’s vitally important to make sure that every team remembered there are two days to the draft.
10:09- In the past, the Red Wings have gotten a lot of good players from later rounds.
10:17- I think there are some inappropriate sexual jokes being made? Not sure? What?
10:13- Wait, why is this in the wrong order? I don’t know. But there’s a trade! Calgary trades Robyn Regehr, something Kodalic, and a 2012 second round pick to Buffalo for Chris Butler and Paul Byron. I think that’s part of Calgary’s plan to get out of “cap jail,” as their GM Jay Feaster put it in an interview.
10:14- Less pomp today. Picks made at the table. The first pick of the second round is David Musil at #31 by the Oilers. Sounds like a cereal, but not a very tasty one.
10:17- Islanders talk quietly. So fast! Jurco! (incomprehensible) So fast! 36 Clendening! Wow I don’t like him either. I already said I didn’t like Rocco Grimaldi.
10:21- #38 Mggm so obscure his name isn’t up. I’ve never heard of him. Russian guy.
10:27- I know nothing about these guys.
10:30- Trade! 47 for 59 and 3rd rounder in 2012. San Jose nowhere the pick, who has whey. Whoa! Hold it! Haha. Was I on drugs during this draft? I don’t think so…but I’m beginning to think that direct interpretation of my notes is actually better than anything I could really think of.
10:31- Xavier Ouellet = Sounds like ocelot. He has almost exactly the same (dungeons? Dungarees? Dweyns?) as I do.
10:32- Another goule, LA. Hard to hear.
10:34- Finnish guy! Ruutu! Love that name! Another Finnish dude! I think there was a run on Finns in here somewhere. Gotta love the run on Finns.
10:43- There’s another Russian! Nesterov. Trade! Columbus trades Nikita Filatov to Ottawa for the 66th pick. And after about half an hour, the second round is already in the books. I told you the second day of the draft goes really fast.
10:47- The Canucks traded the 60th pick to Minnesota for the 71st and 101st. The crowd is all excited because the Wild pick now, and they pick a Minnesota high schooler to Wild cheers from the Wild crowd. This is truly where the Wild things are.
10:49- So fast! Turn the boards around. Very manual.
10:50- Um…there is no 69th pick? Sex. I don’t know why I just said “sex.” I mean, I do, but I don’t know why it’s relevant…
10:52- Also, where is 91? Bruins? The wheels have come off the 2011 NHL Draft.
10:57- Philly takes DeMarcus “Nick” Cousins. And the 69th pick doesn’t exist! Truly bizarre. I did eventually figure out why that was the case, but in the interest of keeping the timeline consistent that will be revealed in its proper place.
10:58- Without fail, the Vancouver Canucks are soundly booed. They take a goalie, after Luongo’s uninspiring Stanley Cup performance.
11:02- While waiting for St. Louis, there is applause for the sour winnies? Grape something. The NHL is like a family business. Maybe this has something to do with children. At some point in time, there was a word intended on that page. That word is long gone.
11:03- Unedited notes read: Trade! St. Louis 72 Rangers Eugene Who The Hell Knows. Rangers take Fogarty. CCR. Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogarty, of course.
11:09- There’s no way this is what I meant to say, but here it is: Frankly 25-ing up so we Coleman feller.
11:11- Everyone loves Winnipeg. They just traded the 97th and 108th picks to Montreal for the 78th. In other words, who cares.
11:12- So much mumbling, I can’t hear the picks.
11:15- The explanation! The 69th pick was forfeited by the Devils that time they tried to sign Ilya Kovalchuk to a sixty-two year contract or something like that. Now YOU KNOW!
11:21- The Islanders trade some dude to the Lightning for “future considerations.” That could mean so many things. A player? A draft pick? A ham sandwich? Only Tampa Bay knows for sure.
11:24- Apparently the NHL tells guys that if they don’t think they’re a top-60 pick they shouldn’t come to the draft. But they come anyway. They’re still coming, even here at 84. So fast. So much mumbling. Josh something just got drafted. Let’s hope Josh Something has a good career.
11:26- “I love raven. He looks either black or Native American, team sounds like Shenanigans.” I’m guessing that last player played for the Shawinigan Cataractes, which might be the coolest team ever.
11:32- Who? Joaquin?
11:38- 100th pick! This is going so fast.
11:40- Another Minnesota high school heard altitude pushing dropadation. Totally.
11:48- That is one French dude. Archambault. Finnish is being spoken now! Why? How? But so cool!
11:50- Haha. Haha. Medicine Hat.
11:55- A guy with very few vowels in his name who wasn’t on the NHL Central Scouting List just got taken. Those don’t sound like very good omens to me. But hey, I could be wrong and probably am. In other news, San Jose trades the 119th pick to Winnipeg for the 133rd and 194th. Riveting. A guy named Suellentrop is taken, which is pretty cool.
12:00- Saying Winnipeg is still fun. Also Zach Yuen is Asian! The 119th pick was born on March 3rd, a great day to be born. There’s also a cute girl around here somewhere, possibly related to one of the draft picks. Neat.
12:03- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (the first overall pick, if you don’t remember Part I) is signing autographs. As the Canucks take a while, fans shout “Hurry up!” and start singing the Jeopardy theme. Someone named Ludwig is taken, which makes up for the wait. At least to me.
12:07- Pulled pork! And only three rounds to go! And with rounds 2 through 4 in the books, I think I’ll stop here and leave the last three oh-so-exciting rounds to NHL Draft Diary, Part IV. Soon I’ll be truly settled into my house and can write things that aren’t just terrible non-jokes about not being able to read my own handwriting. But until then, signing off from the NHL Draft several weeks ago. Saskatoon will make an appearance in Part IV, so get excited. Oh yeah.
